The personal training industry is built on passion — the passion to help people live healthier, stronger, and more confident lives. However, despite positive intentions, many personal trainers struggle and face big challenges in building a sustainable business, especially in New Zealand. In this blog, we will discuss these challenges and issues in detail and look at the ways these issues can be addressed.

As per my understanding and experience, while talking to people who go to the gym and are highly keen to make some positive changes towards their health and appearance, they also believe that having a personal trainer can help them to achieve their goals and play a significant part towards the improvement of their health and also want to have sessions with personal trainers, but when they hear about the fee and the cost per hour, their minds change as they don't see it as affordable and look for other options like YouTube videos from fitness experts and other online sources.

In my opinion, there is nothing like having a personal fitness trainer who can train you under their supervision, where every rep counts and encourages you to perform at your best. This way, clients can achieve results much faster and better.

From my personal experience, having a personal trainer has greatly helped me in reaching my fitness goals, such as reducing body fat and increasing muscle mass. I learned a great deal while being trained by a qualified personal trainer, and I remained motivated to work hard towards my fitness goals. I always encourage people to have sessions with Personal Trainers, and the best investment to make is to invest in your health.

From my experience and speaking to people, here are two significant issues and challenges that lead to burnout or business failure:

1. Personal Training (PT) Fees Are Expensive – and Unsustainable for Clients

Most personal trainers charge anywhere between $70 to $100 per hour. That might sound reasonable on paper, but for everyday Kiwis, it’s often too much to maintain long-term.

Clients may invest in a few initial sessions, but when weekly expenses pile up — such as groceries, rent, and petrol — training becomes a luxury, not a habit. And when clients drop off, trainers lose income and momentum, struggling to retain clients.

2. High Gym Rent Crushes Trainer Profitability

Many PTs rent space in gyms and pay weekly fees ranging from $250 to $400+. This means a trainer must see multiple clients per day to break even before even paying for their own living costs. This means only highly successful personal trainers can survive. In this scenario, it is challenging for new or less experienced Personal Trainers to survive and get business.

Add to this the time spent managing bookings, no-shows, payments, and tracking progress... It’s no surprise that many PTs burn out or quit within a couple of years.

So What’s the Solution?

The answer is not to give up — it’s to work smarter, not harder. Here’s what personal trainers can do to build more sustainable businesses and overcome the challenges they face:

Go Hybrid or Online

Offer virtual coaching, small group sessions, or online programs. These lower costs for clients and give you flexibility in delivery.

Use Affordable Business Tools

Replace paperwork and time-consuming admin with smart tools. Tools like TAHIFIT 360 help you manage clients, bookings, payments, progress, and reminders — all in one place.

Keep Overheads Low

Consider mobile training, outdoor sessions, or hiring a community space instead of locking into expensive gym rent.

Personal Trainer Should Build Retention, Not Just Sales

Focus on client retention with personalised attention, regular progress tracking, and great communication. PTs need to show data with the help of initiative graphs and charts to their clients; a picture is worth a thousand words; clients will love to see their fitness improvements and how they are tracking towards their goals like weight loss, muscle gain or fat loss etc.; all made easier with a CRM like TAHIFIT 360. This approach will also leave a great impression on clients, and they will feel confident that they are being trained by a highly professional and organised fitness trainer. This will significantly contribute to client retention.

Final Thought

The fitness industry needs trainers, but it also needs sustainable systems. Let’s stop seeing passionate PTs burning out or giving up. Let’s empower them with tools, community, and smart strategies to build thriving careers that make a real difference.
